How to measure for a new door

You don’t want to buy an internal door that doesn’t fit, so follow our measuring up guide to make sure that you get the sizes you need.

When buying replacement doors, it’s crucial not to measure the existing door itself. This common mistake can lead to inaccuracies and a poor fit. Instead, always base your measurements on the door frame. This ensures that your new door will fit perfectly within the frame, avoiding any gaps or issues with installation.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to measuring your door frame accurately:

Measure the width of the Door

Using a tape measure, measure the width of the door frame from the inside of one jamb to the inside of the other. Take three measurements: one at the top, one in the middle, and one at the bottom. Use the smallest measurement to ensure the door fits at its narrowest point.

Measure the Height of the Door

Measure the height of the door frame from the floor to the underside of the frame header. Take measurements on both the left and right sides, and again in the middle. Use the smallest measurement to account for any variations in floor level or frame alignment.

Check the Depth

Measure the depth of the door frame from the inside edge to the outer edge. This is particularly important if you’re replacing an external door, as door depths can vary.

Account for Fittings

Consider the space required for hinges, locks, and other fittings. Measure their positions on the frame to ensure your new door can accommodate them without modifications.

Double-Check Your Measurements

Accuracy is key, so double-check all your measurements before purchasing. It’s better to spend a few extra minutes ensuring everything is correct than to deal with the hassle of an internal wooden door that doesn’t fit.

Having gathered your measurements, compare them with the standard sizes available in your chosen door style. Select the most appropriate, remembering that you can plane the edges slightly to reduce the size. If required, please get in contact for details of the lipping size as these vary on each door.
